Paul, once again, talked on the difference between the righteousness that comes from faith and the righteousness from the works of the law. Most times, Christians accept the gospel that talks about attaining unto righteousness by faith, but then still go out of their way to try to attain righteousness again by their works. They say amen to righteousness by faith, but the very next moment they are condemning themselves and thinking of themselves as unworthy of God’s rich salvation. We must run away from the ideology of trying to attain to righteousness by our works because our capability is limited. We must appreciate and bask in the grace of God so that we can attain to the righteousness that Christ obtained for us. A righteousness that is stemming from faith.

The way to accept the gift of righteousness by faith is in two steps. The first is to believe into Christ. This is a matter of the inward salvation. We have to come to a point where we become stubborn of tilting away from the truth of the testimony of Christ. We need that firm faith built on the solid foundation that is Christ Jesus. How then can we build this firm faith? We see from verse 17, that faith comes from hearing and hearing through the word of Christ. We need to surround ourselves with things that declare the testimony of Christ. We need to spend more time in fellowship with Christ, sing the scriptures, read the scriptures, pray the scriptures, singing the hymns and fellowshipping with the brethren. That is on the active side. On the passive side, we need to consciously stay away from situations that could cause us to start to weaken in faith. The things we see, and hear. The things that go into us.
Then also, once we believe with our hearts, we also need to confess with our mouths. This is the outward aspect of our salvation. Declaring the name of Christ. This is an outward demonstration of our inward faith.

Also, in our day-to-day lives, we need constant salvation from the circumstances around us. The things happening around us can cause us to fall out of the joy of our salvation, and hence, we need to constantly re-arm ourselves when dealing with these things, and I believe that is part of what the word in verse 13 is saying. We enter into salvation by calling upon the name of the Lord. A simple ‘Lord Jesus’, ‘Blessed Lord’, ‘O Lord’ May be all it takes to cause us to turn and set our minds on the spirit in our day-to-day experiences.

O Lord, guide us into your truth. Guard our hearts from evil, amen.
